The collaboration between Semtech’s LoRa EdgeTM platform and AWS IoT services unlocks new possibilities in supply chains and logistics asset tracking.

According to a survey conducted by Cleo, 85% of companies experience financial losses due to integration issues within their supply chains. Shockingly, 24% of those companies are losing $500k or more annually, while 14% report losses exceeding $1 million annually. This represents a 40% increase in companies facing such significant losses compared to the previous year.

The recently announced LoRa Basics™ Modem v4 feature release includes a powerful new feature – relay. It allows customers to add battery-operated, easy-to-deploy relay nodes that act as network extenders. These relay nodes can be placed in remote locations or in areas where signal strength is weak due to extreme distances or circumstances, effectively extending the range of existing gateway(s) and networks using LoRaWAN® connectivity.

In today’s interconnected world, the Internet of Things (IoT) is ubiquitous. With this growth comes increasing exposure to security threats and exploitation attempts by malicious actors, threatening customers ranging from critical infrastructure operators to residential consumers who rely on IoT devices for safety and communications. The U.S. government’s recent Executive Order (EO), “Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity,” responds to these risks in part by introducing cybersecurity labeling for consumer IoT products, offering vendors a clear and universal way to inform purchasers of their products of the security features and capabilities present in those products, as well as a living mechanism to quickly access information about any vulnerabilities affecting those products. By making security information more accessible to consumers, this program will lead to more informed consumer IoT purchasing decisions and improved security across a landscape we increasingly share.

We’re grateful to be at CES 2023, where the momentum around solutions with Semtech’s LoRa® devices and the LoRaWAN® standard is incredibly strong. This morning, we had the pleasure of connecting with a wide range of customers, LoRa ecosystem partners and industry experts to discuss the powerful impact of low power, long range Internet of Things (IoT) technologies on enabling a smarter, greener and more resilient future for our planet. The journey to lower carbon emissions — and, more broadly, help the enterprise achieve its environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals — is a cornerstone to Semtech’s innovation for a better world

Estimates suggest that only 10% of the world’s surface has terrestrial connectivity. To establish a truly connected planet with ubiquitous coverage for massive Internet of Things (IoT) deployments, we need to complement terrestrial networks with satellite connectivity, expanding coverage for demanding verticals. The LoRa Alliance® recently upgraded its guidelines to include Long Range Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (LR-FHSS) data rates for the LoRaWAN® standard. The LR-FHSS features significantly increase network capacity and reduce interference, facilitating new deployment opportunities across the globe.

Location is a vital component of the Internet of Things (IoT), encompassing the ability of things to sense and communicate their geographic position. Location data helps organize, track and account for the billions of Internet-connected devices based on sensors and other location-centric elements within them. The ability to capture location data forms the basis of location-based services and starts with the physical radio frequency (RF) technologies that interact with the world around them.

Several technologies, such as GPS, LoRa® and others, can provide outdoor location information. However, these existing technologies are not optimized for IoT asset tracking use cases due to their increased power requirements which require access to frequent charging as well as inability to work indoors. Reducing power consumption on devices fundamentally requires a reduction of compute on device, with IoT this can be accomplished by partitioning the workload between the device and harnessing the power of the Cloud. For precise indoor location, where GPS has no tangible reach, and to enable continuous location detection or tracking, indoor positioning systems (IPS) technologies such as Wi-Fi come into play.
