Celebrating Innovation, Earth Day and Every Day

Happy Earth Day!

The first Earth Day took place April 22, 1970. Back then, 20 million Americans from all walks of life participated in this monumental event that is widely credited for launching the modern environmental movement. Today, Earth Day is observed by more than a billion people from 193 countries as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes.

Earth Day is a perfect time to reassess the resources we use in our daily lives and explore new ways to sustain our planet.

A Smarter Planet

The impact of environmental, social and governance principals are key factors in Semtech’s decision-making process and inform various aspects of the operations in our business. We have been committed to providing innovative and disruptive technology platforms that will enable our customers to deliver solutions that create a smarter, more connected and sustainable world.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing the way we connect and interact with devices designed for social and environmental good. According to the World Economic Forum report, “IoT Guidelines for Sustainability,” 84% of IoT deployments are currently addressing, or have the potential to address, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as defined by the United Nations. Innovative IoT solutions are contributing to smart agriculture, water preservation, energy conservation, air quality monitoring, species protection, and more.

We take great pride that Semtech’s LoRa® devices and the LoRaWAN® standard are being leveraged as building blocks for a variety of IoT environmental applications that maximize efficiencies, reduce waste and better manage our precious natural resources.

By enabling and helping implement a network of sensors and gateways embedded with LoRa, environmental indicators can be measured and reported for data analysis in real time, detecting issues and helping protect citizens from environmental dangers.

To learn more about LoRa, see our white papers, infographics, use cases and application briefs here.

Reducing E-Waste

Electronic waste (e-waste) is among the fastest-growing waste streams globally with 50 million tons generated each year.

Semtech’s Protection Products Group offers the industry’s highest level of defense against threats resulting in premature failure of systems containing electronics such as automobiles, industrial manufacturing systems, mobile phone networks, etc., or electronic products such as smartphones, computers, tablets, monitors, and network switches. Premature failure leads to creation of more e-waste.

Semtech plays an important role in making our planet greener by reducing e-waste and ensuring longer equipment lifetimes. Our protection solutions address more than 15% of the world’s circuit protection needs by volume.

Ultra-low Latency Signal Integrity

In the last decade (2010 to 2020), the number of global internet users doubled to
4.5 billion and internet traffic rose fifteenfold
. The majority of the world’s internet traffic goes through data centers and the wired and wireless networks feeding them – 2.4% of the world’s total, equating to 225 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, it’s critical they be highly energy efficient.

Semtech’s Tri-Edge™ is an innovative analog semiconductor technology developed to ensure reliable transmission of high speed data from point A to point B in an optical communications network to reduce power consumption, latency and cost.

By using industry forecasts of the number of optical links required in data centers and 5G wireless systems by 2027, it is estimated that Tri-Edge deployment (versus DSP) could save up to 1TWh of energy annually. This is the equivalent of powering 100,000 homes, or emissions of 385,000 metric tons of CO2.

Learn how Tri-Edge enables low power for multi-mode fiber links here.

In honor of Earth Day, we want to express gratitude to our dedicated employees and customers who have developed innovative products to preserve and protect our families, our communities and our planet.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.”

—Jane Goodall
