Electronica India 2025: Semtech Advancing Innovation in Wireless Communication, Sensing and Protection

 Swaroop Chitturi

Electronica India 2025, held from September 17–19 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), was a resounding success.

Semtech captivated audiences with its LoRa® Wall of Devices and live demonstrations at Hall 3, Booth C05, underscoring the company’s pivotal role in driving innovation within the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. From next-generation connectivity solutions to real-world applications, Semtech’s exhibits highlighted the power of LoRa technology and the growing momentum of LoRa and LoRaWAN® in India. Complementing this, Semtech also showcased its latest HotSwitch® and SurgeSwitch® protection devices, demonstrating leadership in power integrity and reliability solutions.

Advanced Technology Demonstrations of LoRa product offering

The exhibition featured live technical demonstrations showcasing next-generation LoRa capabilities across diverse application domains.

LoRa-Enabled Voice Communication Systems

One of the most engaging demonstrations at the event was LoRa-enabled walkie-talkie, which drew significant attention, with many attendees eager to experience the technology firsthand. Developed through a collaboration between Sicomm and Murata featuring the Murata 2GT module with Semtech LR1121 LoRa Connect™ chip, the solution showcased long range real-time audio transmission over LoRa—a use case that surprised many who had previously associated LoRa only with small data transfers. This demonstration dispelled that perception by proving that LoRa can reliably support voice communication in sub-GHz as well 2.4 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands. Notably, it provides a cost-effective option for all those cases where traditional walkie-talkies, public announcements, group chats, multi-cast audio streaming for large venues, and other solutions where the conventional radios are short in range.

Applications:
  • Emergency response communications
  • Critical communications in multi-story buildings
  • Backup communication systems where cellular networks are compromised
  • Industrial safety communications
  • Two-wheel point-to-point or cluster communications (group chat)
  • Multi-cast audio streaming or public announcements in large campuses/stadiums

Fast Long-Range Communication (FLRC) Image Transfer

The High-Speed Image Transfer demo showcased the new LoRa Plus™ LR2021 chip, which supports image streaming at up to 2.6 Mbps using FLRC subject to Local ISM band regulations. This demonstrates its ability to provide long-range connectivity for high data-rate applications.

Applications:
  • Security surveillance systems
  • Drone communications and telemetry
  • Remote monitoring applications
  • Industrial inspection systems
  • Border security and perimeter monitoring

LoRa Basics Modem-E platform powered by a solar

The demonstration showcased a solution leveraging the MCU integrated into LoRa Connect LR1121 chip to run an embedded LoRaWAN stack (Modem-E), so reducing external MCU requirements, accelerating design cycle and lowering bill-of-materials costs for LoRaWAN sensors. The demo was powered by a Dracula solar cell and an e-peas power IC, enabling the Modem-E kit to operate solely on ambient light. This served as a perfect example of an ultra-low-power capabilities of LoRaWAN, suitable for battery less systems.

Wi-SUN and LoRaWAN

The "Multi-Connectivity Networking demonstration" showcased LR2021’s ability to support Wi-SUN 4-FSK PHY (Frequency Shift Keying), creating synergies in hybrid or dual networking architectures between LoRaWAN and Wi-SUN networks. This approach could graft LoRaWAN cluster coverage over a Wi-SUN network where mesh density becomes too low to ensure reliable Wi-SUN operation or guaranteed connectivity for ultra-low-power, battery powered or even energy harvested devices.

HotSwitch – Smart Power Path Protection

The HotSwitch family is a product line of devices with an integrated load switch or eFuse designed to detect and respond to electrical fault conditions, ensuring safe system operation by disconnecting the load from the power source during surge or abnormal voltage events. These devices provide comprehensive protection against inrush current, overvoltage, undervoltage, short circuit, and thermal faults, making them a robust choice for power path protection.

During the live demo, the HotSwitch HS2240 instantly disconnected the load from the power source during surge voltage events and restored normal operation within microseconds after the fault was cleared.

Applications:
  • Notebook and tablet computers
  • USB VBUS
  • Telecommunications systems
  • Industrial electronics
